March 18th.

SHALL I ROUSE MYSELF UP TO THIS?

“Perfecting holiness in the fear of God.” 2 Corinthians 7:1

“Having therefore these promises.” I claim the fulfilment of God’s promises, and rightly, but that is only the human side; the Divine side is that through the promises I recognize God’s claim on me. For instance, am I realizing that my body is the temple of the Holy Ghost, or have I a habit of body that plainly will not bear the light of God on it? By sanctification the Son of God is formed in me, then I have to transform my natural life into a spiritual life by obedience to Him. God educates us down to the scruple. When He begins to check, do not confer with flesh and blood, cleanse yourself at once. Keep yourself cleansed in your daily walk.

I have to cleanse myself from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit until both are in accord with the nature of God. Is the mind of my spirit in perfect agreement with the life of the Son of God in me, or am I insubordinate in intellect? Am I forming the mind of Christ, Who never spoke from His right to Himself, but maintained an inner watchfulness whereby He continually submitted His spirit to His Father? I have the responsibility of keeping my spirit in agreement with His Spirit, and by degrees Jesus lifts me up to where He lived – in perfect consecration to His Father’s will, paying no attention to any other thing. Am I perfecting this type of holiness in the fear of God? Is God getting His way with me, and are other people beginning to see God in my life more and more?

Be serious with God and leave the rest gaily alone. Put God first literally.

Do you ever find that your Christian walk is frustrating? Are you trying so hard to be a Christian, yet finding yourself instead so confused and flip-flopping from feeling you are on top of it, only to find yourself failing over an over and want to crawl away in guilt or lash out in anger at the seeming futility of trying to make it work or ‘feel real’? You may even be feeling so sick of yourself and feeling a failure and don’t see the point of going on.

Perhaps you wish you could have more with the Lord? Are you even aware that there is in fact more than you have at this point in your life – far more? Have you sought advice from other Christians who are really just in the same boat as you are and they have no answers either – perhaps you have even sought answers from a pastor who listens, and then told you to pray about it – that it is a normal part of the walk, yet you leave him too with nothing real or concrete to hold onto, to give you a glimmer of hope of ever getting it right.

Perhaps people have suggested scriptures for you or books to read. The list is endless of advice you may receive.

Does Christianity really even work?

The problem is, that often those we seek advice from, do not know the answer themselves as they are going through what we are…or it does not bother them enough to find out the Truth and they are quite happy in their complacency and don’t want to get too serious – as someone recently shared with me, -”As long as I am just saved, that’s enough”.

All I share, both above and below this, is my own life-story and in no way do I stand over here and point at you. I know this difficulty, I know this disillusionment of walking in a frustrated ‘funk’, I know this suffering of the Lord where He allows us to reach beyond our grasp for Him where we feel so desperate that we would rather not have been born if “this is all Christianity is”.

In the flesh, it is a very frightening, but necessary place to be as you feel have no place to turn and you are getting no answers that can satisfy this gnawing, churning inside you, until you realise that the Lord Jesus is all and more sufficient to answer our cry. In the spirit, it is a place of utter rejoicing as nothing comes to us unless through Revelation.

Psalm 81:10
I am the LORD your God,Who brought you out of the land of Egypt; Openyour mouth wide, and I will fill it.

The one thing above all that is needful to bring about any real life-changing as a Christian, is that you understand fully that as long as you are doing the fixing and changing and ‘making it real’, it’s not going to happen no matter what you try. You are going to fail over and over and over and God will allow it to take place until you get to the very end of yourself and you see or realise that you simply cannot bring it about.

This is His wonderful Revelation.

The Revelation comes first, then the working out of it in our lives. It does not stay in our heads only, but is worked out in the reality of the actuality of our lives. The day -to-day grind. The mundane, the boring, the ordinary. And it is tough. We are to lean on Him and look to Him for it all.

The Lord may allow you too, to get to a state of desperation where you feel you will break in two if He does not give you this reality with Him i.e. Him for Himself and not for anything He gives you or blesses you with. Everything else pails in the light of this where nothing and no-one else matters but Him. It is a road of unimaginable agony to walk, but if this is Who you really want, you will more than likely be taken down this road.

God will do it and does do it. Praise Him!!

This is the very life-changing that is required. The crucified life, the surrendered life, the relinquished life. Seeing life through a Christ consciousness, not a ’self’ consciousness.

Open your mouth wide and ask the Lord to fill it. Have no preconceived ideas or notions of what He is going to do with you. Allow Him full reign and become a leaf in the wind of the Holy Spirit and allow Him to do with you as He will and blow you where He will. There is such freedom within this. Such security and such safety. As a child of the only True Living God, you are His treasure and He knows exactly what is needful for you to become the man or woman HE wants you to become. Trust Him to know best, regardless of the circumstances you might find yourself in and understand that all that is going on is part of what is needful for you to get where He needs you to be. Romans 8:28. It is all for His glory and our good.

I really trust that this may have reached a deep place in some struggling hearts who are yearning for more of Him and less of themselves. May the Lord bless you and show you what it is that is required of you, His way, and may you also know unequivocally, that He will equip you with all that you need.

All Glory to Our Lord!

THE RELINQUISHED LIFE

“I am crucified with Christ.” Galatians 2:20

No one is ever united with Jesus Christ until he is willing to relinquish not sin only, but his whole way of looking at things. To be born from above of the Spirit of God means that we must let go before we lay hold, and in the first stages it is the relinquishing of all pretence. What Our Lord wants us to present to Him is not goodness, nor honesty, nor endeavour, but real solid sin; that is all He can take from us. And what does He give in exchange for our sin? Real solid righteousness. But we must relinquish all pretence of being any thing, all claim of being worthy of God’s consideration.

Then the Spirit of God will show us what further there is to relinquish. There will have to be the relinquishing of my claim to my right to myself in every phase. Am I willing to relinquish my hold on all I possess, my hold on my affections, and on everything, and to be identified with the death of Jesus Christ?

There is always a sharp painful disillusionment to go through before we do relinquish. When a man really sees himself as the Lord sees him, it is not the abominable sins of the flesh that shock him, but the awful nature of the pride of his own heart against Jesus Christ. When he sees himself in the light of the Lord, the shame and the horror and the desperate conviction come home.

If you are up against the question of relinquishing, go through the crisis, relinquish all, and God will make you fit for all that He requires of you.

July 22, 2009

NewsWithViews.com

I’d love to know who sold Christians and clergy the bogus notion that the church somehow needs to be more “relevant” to the culture in order to win it for Christ. You can hardly escape the word in Christian circles today. It’s absolutely everywhere believers are, and is used incessantly alongside other trendy terms like “connect,” “passion,” “purpose,” “awesome” and “tolerance” – flying out the mouths of church leaders as if it were some sacred biblical principle that should be worn like a phylactery on our foreheads and proclaimed from the rooftops lest we forget and, Heaven forbid, be a contrast to the culture in which we live.

The word “relevant” is not even in the Bible – except in one so-called bible version and verse – if you can bear to call The Message a Bible. But, the amazing irony of its brief appearance there, is that it points out perfectly why Christians should avoid being relevant:

“Don’t be flip with the sacred. Banter and silliness give no honor to God. Don’t reduce holy mysteries to slogans. In trying to be relevant, you’re only being cute and inviting sacrilege.” – Matthew 7:6

Does that not accurately describe the relevant church today: cute, flippant, silly and full of slogans and sacrilege? Sounds just like the seeker-sensitive, purpose driven and emerging church to me!

Throughout scripture, in both the Old and New Testament, God’s own are repeatedly referred to as a “peculiar people.” (Exodus 19:5, Deuteronomy 14:2, 26:18, Titus 2:14 & 1st Peter 2:9) I’ve written about this many times over the years.

That means we ought to be viewed by the world around us as distinctive. But how can Christians be both distinctive and relevant? And just how does one “connect” with a culture and not be “unequally yoked” to it?

Being distinctive is what being sanctified and set apart for God is all about. We’re not suppose to look and act like the rest of the world. We’re not called to blend in.

We’re called to “come out from among them” and stand out as a testimony to God’s power and presence in a corrupt kingdom! You see, if we don’t look or act any different from the world around us, then we’re probably not any different.

But the church isn’t teaching sanctification anymore because it’s an unfashionable, unpopular and outdated word that scares sinners and separates Christians from the culture of cool. No, today’s church has, instead, set its heart on being more relevant to the culture than righteous before God in a prideful and egregious effort to help Jesus get the numbers up.

“Go ye into all the world and be relevant?”

I don’t          think so.

In my estimation, the word “relevant” was simply another devilishly dialectic term marketed to the church as a clever way to help Christians appeal to the flesh of the lost and buddy-up to the Beelzebub Club without appearing to compromise one’s Christian faith. But, that’s exactly what it does. And the more relevant one becomes to the enemies of Christ, the more irrelevant they become to God.

A preacher at a local megachurch my wife and I recently visited proudly told me a few days ago that he’s known as the pastor of the “coolest church in town” – using the word “cool” in various forms repeatedly in his email message, as if that would somehow impress me and make membership there more attractive. Unfortunately, he didn’t realize that it would actually have the opposite effect. So, he was a little surprised and offended when I told him that “cool is not a fruit of the Spirit.”

If Christians have any relevance to this world, it is that we currently share it with unbelievers, who, like us, have a sinful nature. That’s all the relevance to this world Christians need in order to bear witness of the saving grace that came by Jesus Christ. It certainly isn’t necessary that we seek out more relevance than we already have.

Shall we now imitate more perfectly the hell-bound culture we were saved from as a means to win its favor, cooperation and participation? That’s not evangelism – that’s capitulation.

Being sanctified means we belong to Someone else now – Someone Who has forgiven our trespasses and sins and called us out of our old lives of depravity and rebellion to be “a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable unto God.”

Suffice it to say, our time as Christians would be better spent swimming upstream against the currents of compromise and corruption than finding some fashionable flotilla with which to comfortably fit in and ride the rapids of relevancy over the falls to our spiritual demise.

“And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.” – 1st Kings 18:21

I have two articles today that I wish to bring to your attention.

The first is from a very dear brother in the Lord, Tim, who lives in Australia and who has his own blog called Flee The Wrath. I have been so very blessed by this friendship over the past year or so.

Tim has written a really great article on the IGeneration of today’s church and chats about how much of the visible church has become so self / I / Me / Mine centred and the lure of the modern gadgetry and messages of how you can have the Lord and still keep your life and how the true Gospel of the Lord which is in total opposition to this teaching, is not heard very often as it is not ‘user friendly’ and makes people ‘uncomfortable and offended!

The second article is called Why so many churches hear so little of the Bible, and is from Prophecy News Watch. Please go to the link to read this article in full.

Both these articles boil down to this : Relevance, relevance, relevance = compromise, compromise, compromise = eternal spiritual death. There is only one way to live in Christ and that is God’s way. Lose the Cross and you lose the Atonement, Lose the Atonement and you have lost Jesus and God’s plan for the salvation of mankind and you have lost eternally.

Tim’s article is in full below, but please go over to his blog to comment there if you would like to – I know he will so appreciate it

iGeneration in the church

February 25, 2010

I wrote a post some weeks ago of my concern about raising children amidst a generation of I, Me and My. Some of you kindly responded with suggestions and thoughts. The question I pondered was how do I instill into the lives of my children the values of Christ-likeness, which seem so opposed to the thinking that pervades our western culture. A culture which is so “i” focused.

When one is surrounded by the riches and comforts of Babylon, there seems to be little motivation to move, or be moved and to flee from the rotting stench of a selfish and complacent faith. Our kids, my kids are surrounded and enamored of this culture of entertainment and technology and I am troubled by it all. Even amongst so many churches today, we have adopted the I, me, my gospel messages.

It is recorded in John 12:25 That Christ taught them so…those who love their lives will lose them, and those who hate their lives in this world will guard them for everlasting life.

Those who hate their lives in this world….hate their lives in this world will guard themselves for salvation. Hate is a strong word.

Right now I’m thinking about all of those churches today whose slogan, motto, whatever you call it, is something like…..Love God, Love people, Love life. And the crowds cheer because here is a church which will teach you how you can love God, love people and love and hang on to so many of your wicked and worldly ways.

Surely if that was a biblical slogan, it would say….Love God, Love people, Hate life….. I suppose 2 out of 3 aint bad. On the downside a half truth is actually a lie.

Yeah sure I understand, who would go to a church that had that slogan written on their advertising sign. Perhaps you might suggest to me that I misinterpret the message. That’s fine, I just think we make it sound all too easy, this whole gospel of ”you can follow Jesus and love the things of the world”

When I googled that slogan “Love god, Love people, Love life” the first church website that came up had a message for all to read concerning God’s economy, the global financial crisis and how you as a Christian do not have to endure financial hardship if you honour the command in Deuteronomy. You see, everything is about you, it’s all focused on You and God’s word is for You so that You can get the most out of this world and that no hardship need come thy way child of righteousness.

But is it the wrong life that we are teaching people to love? It sure looks to me like an earthly, sensual, demonic life of the flesh gospel, which leads to death. An immitation, bogus gospel wrapped up to look like the real thing. God help us all. Whatever happened to living a crucified life, of death to self, of forsaking all to follow, of denying iSelf, of picking up ones cross of burden and sorrows, of suffering for righteosness sake, of speaking truth at a personal cost, of charity beyond worldy giving. There is no cross to bare, no suffering for righteousness and that’s how you can love life, just like the sign says.

Can we not step back from all of this mess and just tell the people to look toward the Saviour, look upon His life, and imitate Him. Is that so hard? Must we alter, sweeten, candy coat and wrap up the gospel in a veil of death. Are we so blind that we canot see that this gospel does not look like Christ, and if it does not look like Him, it is not of Him.

I just thank God that my kids don’t listen to or watch God TV or Christian radio at all. They would have little hope of discerning the truth from the error. Truly, it’s difficult enough instilling into them Christlike values without having the gospel of lasciviousness added to their lives via well meaning Christian media.

I used to wonder why the church did these things, why do we so often sweeten the word, soften it, make it more palatable, take away from it’s sting or the sharpness of the sword of the word. Then I read the apostle Peter’s words explaining what would happen to the church as a result of leaders and teachers who have not crucified their own flesh, and who have held on to their covetous hearts. Peter goes on to explain in 2 Peter that because of their covetousness and sensuality, the way of truth will be maligned, perverted, and no longer clear.

2 Peter 2: But there were also false prophets in Israel, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will cleverly teach their destructive heresies about God and even turn against their Master who bought them. Theirs will be a swift and terrible end.
Many will follow their evil teaching and shameful immorality. And because of them, Christ and his true way will be slandered.
In their greed they will make up clever lies to get hold of your money. But God condemned them long ago, and their destruction is on the way.

Please, if you must teach the word of God, do so with fear and trembling. Add nothing too it and take nothing away from it. Point the people toward the Saviour and do not seek to make men comfortable in their sin, or disguise the covetousness of their hearts with worldly teachings.

The way of truth is being maligned in our day Christian, do not suppose that the men of this generation have managed to avoid the snare which has caught so many that went before us. Take heed lest you also fall into their deceptive ways.

Bless you

I am not sure how many this will apply to who visit here, but I feel it is worth mentioning.

In my neck of the woods, the Twilight books and then the movie, were all huge hits. When the books came out, I discovered after the fact, that my son and all his friends – all around 16-18 had read them and was curious to see why books, which were written for the teenage-girl market, were holding these young dudes (as they call each other ) like this. I got to know a little more, from a blog I chanced upon. It had a letter from a mum of teenage girls, warning parents who were under the impression that this was a ‘Christian’ book that they were very mistaken.

I had never thought that, I had never really had a look at them to be totally honest and thought up until that point that the books were just teenage romantic fiction – I asked my son and a friend if it had any sex in it and his friend answered, “No, but the sensuality was incredible!” It was apparently the way the authoress wrote the romance, that was fascinating for him. Our kids are growing up in a much freer, sexually- orientated ‘in-your-face’ world like I did not, here in South Africa back in the 70’s and 80’s.

Once I had read this mom’s letter, I had a discussion with my son about the content of the books, but he just kind of waved them away as fiction – a great story – a love story – so romantic! Incredible read!

I discussed the way we are presented with things and how they may seem harmless on the outset, but have a greater, darker agenda within.

I also handed this aspect of being a mum over to the Lord as I do with the rest that goes on in my life. I would not manage if I could not do this.

When your child is 17, it is not as easy to remove books or prevent them from reading specific books as you were able to when they were younger or even at times, know what they are reading. We need incredible wisdom from the Lord to know how to handle each and every situation and to understand that the Lord is in the actual day to day living of our lives, not tucked away inside some church somewhere or in a Bible study or to be picked out when we need a touch or a comfort. The Lord uses such situations to allow you to chat about Him with others. He is in absolutely everything – the real dealings we have with others, the choices we make, every move we make, He is there, if we are in Him.

I have also have had to come to understand that the Lord is speaking to my son His way. When He does, and I see the results, It is quite overwhelming. We can guide to the best we can with the Lord’s guiding hand, but there is a time that comes, when you have to sit back and take your hands off and allow the Lord to save your children out of the world, just like many of us were or even possibly for some, out of a church somewhere. We cannot save our children. We can but point them to the Lord Jesus and the Lord does the rest in His good time and pleasure.

To come back to the Twilight books and movie, I came across this really good link and the article written by Eric Barger, who has a discernment ministry. From the little I have read, he is quite sound and he has done a really good write-up in the form of a leaflet regarding the Twilight series and why it is not what Christians should be contemplating on reading and how many have been misled by it. He also has a few testimonies of people who did not realise the problems.

More than ever we need to be awake to the subtleties and cunning of the enemy and I pray that the information that is in the article below might assist someone who is perhaps in a situation where His blessed Truth is needed.

And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. 15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works. 2 Cor 11:13-14

The link is called :

Bringing Twilight out into the Son Blockbuster books and hit movies confuse evil with good

An excerpt from the write up, by Bill Barger

I will admit that, in comparison, the content of Twilight seems lightweight in the overall scheme of today’s motion picture industry. The trailers previewing other forthcoming features that were shown before the screening of Twilight were frankly shocking and full of occultism and gut-wrenching violence. However, have we stooped so low as to say Twilight, with its vampire heroes and PG-13 rating is somehow more acceptable than the more gruesome R-rated jobs?” Is “not as bad as” somehow a prerequisite, making something OK for our kids? Since when did “the lesser-of-two-evils” become a biblical principle? One needs to be aware that there are Satanists who in real life practice drinking the blood of humans. To many occultists, vampirism is not just a fairy tale but something coveted. No matter how dreamy Hollywood may present Edward Cullen to be or how obsessed some junior higher may become with him, Twilight is nothing short of Satan’s cloak of evil appearing good. Remember, the most deceptive evil is not the most obvious. It is the most subtle. It also induces more people who may be repulsed by overt darkness to begin the journey from right to wrong.

Two Scriptures immediately come to mind here.

And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. – II Corinthians 11:14

Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight! – Isaiah 5:20-21

Bless you

I was so blessed this afternoon reading the wonderful, adoring words of this Psalm…

Psalm 33  (ESV)

The Steadfast Love of the LORD

1 Shout for joy in the LORD, O you righteous!
Praise befits the upright.
<sup id="en-ESV-14369">2</sup> Give thanks to the LORD with the lyre;
make melody to him with the harp of ten strings!
<sup id="en-ESV-14370">3</sup> Sing to him a new song;
play skilfully on the strings, with loud shouts.

4 For the word of the LORD is upright,
and all his work is done in faithfulness.
<sup id="en-ESV-14372">5</sup> He loves righteousness and justice;
the earth is full of the steadfast love of the LORD.

6 By the word of the LORD the heavens were made,
and by the breath of his mouth all their host.
<sup id="en-ESV-14374">7 </sup>He gathers the waters of the sea as a heap;
he puts the deeps in storehouses.

<sup id="en-ESV-14375">8</sup> Let all the earth fear the LORD;
let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him!
<sup id="en-ESV-14376">9</sup> For he spoke, and it came to be;
he commanded, and it stood firm.

<sup id="en-ESV-14377">10</sup> The LORD brings the counsel of the nations to nothing;
he frustrates the plans of the peoples.
11 The counsel of the LORD stands forever,
the plans of his heart to all generations.
12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD,
the people whom he has chosen as his heritage!

<sup id="en-ESV-14380">13</sup> he LORD looks down from heaven;
he sees all the children of man;
14 from where he sits enthroned he(U) looks out
on all the inhabitants of the earth,
15 he who fashions the hearts of them all
and observes all their deeds.
<sup id="en-ESV-14383">16</sup> The king is not saved by his great army;
a warrior is not delivered by his great strength.
17 The war horse is a false hope for salvation,
and by its great might it cannot rescue.

18 Behold,) the eye of the LORD is on those who fear him,
on those who hope in his steadfast love,
19 that he may deliver their soul from death
and keep them alive in famine.

<sup id="en-ESV-14387">20 </sup>Our soul waits for the LORD;
he is our help and our shield.
21 For our heart is glad in him,
because we trust in his holy name.
22 Let your steadfast love, O LORD, be upon us,
even as we hope in you.

Bless you

Not faith, but Christ -- Horatius Bonar

OUR justification is the direct result of our believing the gospel; our knowledge of our own justification comes from believing God’s promise of justification to every one who believes these glad tidings. For there is not only the divine testimony, but there is the promise annexed to it, assuring eternal life to everyone who receives that testimony. There is first, then, a believed gospel, and then there is a believed promise. The latter is the “appropriation,” as it is called, which, after all, is nothing but the acceptance of the promise which is everywhere coupled with the gospel message. The believed gospel saves; but it is the believed promise that assures us of this salvation.

Yet, after all, faith is not our righteousness. It is accounted to us in order to righteousness (Rom 4:5, GREEK), but not as righteousness; for in that case it would be a work like any other doing of man, and as such would be incompatible with the righteousness of the Son of God; the “righteousness which is by faith.” Faith connects us with the righteousness, and is therefore totally distinct from it. To confound the one with the other is to subvert the whole gospel of the grace of God. Our act of faith must ever be a separate thing from that which we believe.

God reckons the believing man as having done all righteousness, though he has not done any, and though his faith is not righteousness. In this sense it is that faith is counted to us for, or in order to, righteousness, — and that we are “justified by faith.” Faith does not justify as a work, or as a moral act, or a piece of goodness, nor as a gift of the Spirit, but simply because it is the bond between us and the Substitute; a very slender bond in one sense, but strong as iron in another. The work of Christ for us is the object of faith; the Spirit’s work in us is that which produces this faith: it is out of the former, not of the latter, that our peace and justification come. Without the touch of the rod the water would not have gushed forth; yet it was the rock and not the rod, that contained the water.

The bringer of the sacrifice into the tabernacle was to lay his hand upon the head of the sheep or the bullock, otherwise the offering would not have been accepted for him. But the laying on of his hand was not the same as the victim on which it was laid. The serpent-bitten Israelite was to look at the uplifted serpent of brass in order to be healed. But his looking was not the brazen serpent. We may say it was his looking that healed him, just as the Lord said, “lily faith hath saved thee”; but this is figurative language. It was not his act of looking that healed him, but the object to which he locked. So faith is not our righteousness: it merely knits us to the righteous One, and makes us partakers of His righteousness. By a natural figure of speech, faith is often magnified into something great; whereas it is really nothing but our consenting to be saved by another~ its supposed magnitude is derived from the greatness of the object which it grasps, the excellence of the righteousness which it accepts. Its preciousness is not its own, but the preciousness of Him to whom it links us.

Faith is not our physician; it only brings us to the Physician. It is not even our medicine; it only administers the medicine, divinely prepared by Him who “healeth all our diseases.” In all our believing, let us remember God’s word to Israel: “I am Jehovah, that healeth thee” (Exod. 14:26). Our faith is but our touching Jesus; and what is even this, in reality, but His touching us?

Faith is not our saviour. It was not faith that was born at Bethlehem and died on Golgotha for us. It was not faith that loved us, and gave itself for us; that bore our sins in its own body on the tree; that died and rose again for our sins. Faith is one thing, the Saviour is another. Faith is one thing, and the cross is another. Let us not confound them, nor ascribe to a poor, imperfect act of man, that which belongs exclusively to the Son of the Living God.

Faith is not perfection. Yet only by perfection can we be saved; either our own or another’s. That which is imperfect cannot justify, and an imperfect faith could not in any sense be a righteousness. If it is to justify, it must be perfect. It must be like “the Lamb, without blemish and without spot” An imperfect faith may connect us with the perfection of another; but it cannot of itself do aught for us, either in protecting us from wrath or securing the divine acquittal. All faith here is imperfect; and our security is this, that it matters not how poor or weak our faith maybe: if it touches the perfect One, all is well. The touch draws out the virtue that is in Him, and we are saved. The slightest imperfection in our faith, if faith were our righteousness, would be fatal to every hope. But the imperfection of our faith, however great, if faith be but the approximation or contact between us and the fulness of the Substitute, is no hindrance to our participation of His righteousness. God has asked and provided a perfect righteousness; He nowhere asks nor expects a perfect faith. An earthenware pitcher can convey water to a traveller’s thirsty lips as well as one of gold; nay, a broken vessel, even if there be but “a sherd to take water from the pit” (Isa 30:14), will suffice. So a feeble, very feeble faith, will connect us with the righteousness of the Son of God; the faith, perhaps, that can only cry, “Lord, I believe; help mine unbelief.”

Faith is not satisfaction to God. In no sense and in no aspect can faith be said to satisfy God, or to satisfy the law. Yet if it is to be our righteousness, it must satisfy. Being imperfect, it cannot satisfy; being human, it cannot satisfy, even though it were perfect That which satisfies must be capable of bearing our guilt; and that which bears our guilt must be not only perfect, but divine. It is a sin-bearer that we need, and our faith cannot be a sin-bearer. Faith can expiate no guilt; can accomplish no propitiation; can pay no penalty; can wash away no stain; can provide no righteousness. It brings us to the cross, where there is expiation, and propitiation, and payment, and cleansing, and righteousness; but in itself it has no merit and no virtue.

Faith is not Christ, nor the cross of Christ. Faith is not the blood, nor the sacrifice; it is not the altar, nor the laver, nor the mercy-seat, nor the incense. It does not work, but accepts a work done ages ago; it does not wash, but leads us to the fountain opened for sin and uncleanness. It does not create; it merely links us to that new thing which was created when the “everlasting righteousness” was brought in (Dan 9:24).

And as faith goes on, so it continues; always the beggar’s outstretched hand, never the rich man’s gold; always the cable, never the anchor, the knocker, not the door, or the palace, or the table; the handmaid, not the mistress; the lattice which lets in the light, not the sun.

Without worthiness in itself, it knits us to the infinite worthiness of Him in whom the Father delights; and so knitting us, presents us perfect in the perfection of another. Though it is not the foundation laid in Zion, it brings us to that foundation, and keeps us there, “grounded and settled” (Col 1:23), that we may not be moved away from the hope of the gospel. Though it is not “the gospel,” the “glad tidings,” it receives these good news as God’s eternal verities, and bids the soul rejoice in them; though it is not the burnt-offering, it stands still and gazes on the ascending flame, which assures us that the wrath which should have consumed the sinner has fallen upon the Substitute.

Though faith is not “the righteousness,” it is the tie between it and us. It realizes our present standing before God in the excellency of His own Son; and it tells us that our eternal standing, in the ages to come, is in the same excellency, and depends on the perpetuity of that righteousness which can never change. For never shall we put off that Christ whom we put on when we believed (Rom 12:14; Gal 3:27). This divine raiment is “to everlasting.” It waxes not old, it cannot be rent, and its beauty fadeth not away.

Nor does faith lead us away from that cross to which at first it led us. Some in our day speak as if we soon got beyond the cross, and might leave it behind; that the cross having done all it could do for us when first we came under its shadow, we may quit it and go forward; that to remain always at the cross is to be babes, not men.

But what is the cross? It is not the mere wooden pole, or some imitation of it, such as Romanists use. These we may safely leave behind us. We need not pitch our tent upon the literal Golgotha, or in Joseph’s garden. But the great truth which the cross embodies we can no more part with than we can past with life eternal. In this sense, to turn our back upon the cross is to turn our back upon Christ crucified, — to give up our connection with the Lamb that was slain. The truth is, that all that Christ did and suffered, from the manger to the tomb, forms one glorious whole, no part of which shall ever become needless or obsolete; no past of which can ever leave without forsaking the whole. I am always at the manger, and yet I know that mere incarnation cannot save; always at Gethsemane, and yet I believe that its agony was not the finished work; always at the cross, with my face toward it, and my eye on the crucified One, and yet I am persuaded that the sacrifice there was completed once for all; always looking into the grave, though I rejoice that it is empty, and that “He is not here, but is risen”; always resting (with the angel) on the stone that was rolled away, and handling the grave-clothes, and realizing a risen Christ, nay, an ascended and interceding Lord, yet on no pretext whatever leaving any part of my Lord’s life or death behind me, but unceasingly keeping up my connection with Him, as born, living, dying, buried, and rising again, and drawing out from each part some new blessing every day and hour.

Man, in his natural spirit of self-justifying legalism, has tried to get away from the cross of Christ and its perfection, or to erect another cross instead, or to setup a screen of ornaments between himself and it, or to alter its true meaning into something more congenial to his tastes, or to transfer the virtue of it to some act or performance or feeling of its own. Thus the simplicity of the cross is nullified, and its saving power is denied. For the cross saves completely, or not at all. Our faith does not divide the work of salvation between itself and the cross. It is the acknowledgement that the cross alone saves, and that it saves alone. Faith adds nothing to the cross, nor to its healing virtue. It owns the fulness, and sufficiency, and suitableness of the work done there, and bids the toiling spirit cease from its labours and enter into rest. Faith does not come to Calvary to do anything. It comes to see the glorious spectacle of all things done, and to accept this completion without a misgiving as to its efficacy. It listens to the “It is finished!” of the Sin-bearer, and says, “Amen.” Where faith begins, there labour ends, — labour, I mean, “for” life and pardon. Faith is rest, not toil. It is the giving up all the former weary efforts to do or feel something good, in order to induce God to love and pardon; and the calm reception of the truth so long rejected, that God is not waiting for any such inducements, but loves and pardons of His own goodwill, and is showing that goodwill to any sinner who will come to Him on such a footing, casting away his own performances or goodnesses, and relying implicitly upon the free love of Him who so loved the world that He gave His only-begotten Son.

Faith is the acknowledgment of the entire absence of all goodness in us, and the recognition of the cross as the substitute for all the want on our part. Faith saves, because it owns the complete salvation of another, and not because it contributes anything to that salvation. There is no dividing or sharing the work between our own belief and Him in whom we believe. The whole work is His, not ours, from the first to last. Faith does not believe in itself, but in the Son of God. Like the beggar, it receives everything, but gives nothing. It consents to be a debtor forever to the free love of God. Its resting-place is the foundation laid in Zion. It rejoices in another, not in itself. Its song is, “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but by His mercy He saved us.”

Christ crucified is to be the burden of our preaching, and the substance of our belief, from first to last. At no time in the saint’s life does he cease to need the cross; though at times he may feel that his special need, in spiritual perplexity or the exigency of conflict with evil, may be the incarnation, or the agony in the garden, or the resurrection, or the hope of the promised advent, to be glorified in His saints, and admired in all them that believe.

But the question is not, “What truths are we to believe?” but, What truths are we to believe FOR JUSTIFICATION?

That Christ is to come again in glory and in majesty, as Judge and King, is an article of the Christian faith, the disbelief of which would almost lead us to doubt the Christianity of him who disbelieves it. Yet we are not in any sense justified by the second advent of our Lord, but solely by His first. We believe in His ascension, yet our justification is not connected with it. So we believe His resurrection, yet we are not justified by faith in it, but by faith in His death, — that death which made Him at once our propitiation and our righteousness.

“He was raised again on account of our having been justified” (Rom 4:25) is the clear statement of the word. The resurrection was the visible pledge of a justification already accomplished.

“The power of His resurrection” (Phil 3:10) does not refer to atonement, or pardon, or reconciliation; butte our being renewed in the spirit of our minds, to our being “begotten again unto a living hope, by the resurrection from the dead” (1 Pet 1:3). That which is internal, such as our quickening, our strengthening, our renewing, may be connected with resurrection and resurrection power, but that which is external, such as God’s pardoning, and justifying, and accepting, must be connected with the cross alone.

The doctrine of our being justified by an infused resurrection-righteousness or, as it is called, justification in arisen Christ, is a clear subversion of the Surety’s work when “He died for our sins, according to the Scriptures,” or when “He washed us from our sins in His own blood,” or when He gave us the robes “washed white in the blood of the Lamb.”

It is the blood that justifies (Rom 5:9). It is the blood that pacifies the conscience, purging it from dead works to serve the living God (Heb 9:14). It is the blood that emboldens us to enter through the veil into the holiest, and go up to the sprinkled mercy-seal It is the blood that we are to drink for the quenching of our thirst (John 6:55). It is the blood by which we have peace with God (Col 1:20). It is the blood through which we have redemption (Eph 1:7), and by which we are brought nigh (Eph 2:13), by which we are sanctified (Heb 13:12). It is the blood which is the seal of the everlasting covenant (Heb 13:20). It is the blood which cleanses (1 John 1:7), which gives us victory (Rev 12:11), and with which we have communion in the Supper of the Lord (1 Cor 10:16). It is the blood which is the purchase-money or ransom of the church of God (Acts 20:28).

The blood and the resurrection are very different things; for the blood is death, and the resurrection is life.

It is remarkable that in the book of Leviticus there is no reference to resurrection in any of the sacrifices. It is death throughout. All that is needed for a sinner’s pardon, and justification, and cleansing, and peace, is there fully set forth in symbol, — and that symbol is death upon the altar. Justification by any kind of infused or inherent righteousness is wholly inconsistent with the services of the tabernacle, most of all justification by an infused, resurrection-righteousness.

The sacrifices are God’s symbolical exposition of the way of a sinner’s approach and acceptance; and in none of these does resurrection hold any place. If justification be in a risen Christ, then assuredly that way was not revealed to Israel; and the manifold offerings so minutely detailed, did not answer the question: How may man be just with God? nor give to the worshippers of old one hint as to the way by which God was to justify the ungodly.

“Christ in us, the hope of glory” (Col 1:27), is a well-known and blessed truth; but Christ IN US, our justification, is a ruinous error, leading man away from a crucified Christ — a Christ crucified FOR US. Christ for us is one truth; Christ in us is quite another. The mingling of these two together, or the transposition of them, is the nullifying of the one finished work of the Substitute. Let it be granted that Christ in us is the source of holiness and fruitfulness (John 15:4); but let it never be overlooked that first of all there be Christ FOR US, as our propitiation, our justification, our righteousness. The risen Christ in us, our justification, is a modern theory which subverts the cross. Washing, pardoning, reconciling, justifying, all come from the one work of the cross, not from resurrection. The dying Christ completed the work for us from which all the above benefits flow. The risen Christ but sealed and applied what, three days before, He had done once for all.

It is somewhat remarkable that in the Lord’s Supper (as in the passover) there is no reference to resurrection. The broken body and the shed blood are the Alpha and Omega of that ordinance. In it we have communion (not with Christ as risen and glorified, but) with the body of Christ and the blood of Christ (1 Cor 10:16), that is, Christ upon the cross. “This do in remembrance of me.” “As oft as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do show the Lord’s death till He come.” If, after we have been at the cross, we are to pass on and leave it behind us, as no longer needed, seeing we are justified by the risen Christ in us, let those who bold that deadly error say why all reference to resurrection should be excluded from the great feast; and why the death of the Lord should be the one object presented to us at the table.

“Life in a risen Christ” is another way of expressing the same error. If by this were only meant that resurrection has been made the channel or instrument through which the life and justification are secured for us on and by the cross, — as when the apostle speaks of our being begotten again unto a lively hope by the “resurrection of Christ from the dead,” or when we are said to be “risen with Christ,” — one would not object to the phraseology. But when we find it used as expressive of dissociation of these benefits from the cross, and derivation of them from resurrection soley, then do we condemn it as untrue and anti-scriptural. For concerning this ‘life” let us hear the words of the Lord: “The bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world” (John 6:51), “Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink His blood, ye have no life in you. Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him” (John 6:53-56). This assuredly is not the doctrine of “life in a risen Christ,” or “a risen Christ in us, our justification and life.” I do not enter on the exposition of these verses. I simply cite them.. They bear witness to the cross. They point to the broken body and shed blood as our daily and hourly food, our life-long feast, from which there comes into us the life which the Son of man, by His death, has obtained for us. That flesh is life-imparting, that blood is life-imparting; and this not once, but for evermore.

It is not incarnation on the one hand, nor is it resurrection on the other, on which we are thus to feed, and out of which this life comes forth; it is that which lies between these two, — death, — the sacrificial death of the Son of God. It is not the personality nor the life-history of the Christ of God which is the special quickener and nourishment of our souls, but the blood-shedding. Not that we are to separate the former from the latter, but still it is on the latter that we are specially to feed, and this all the days of our lives.

“Christ, our passover, has been sacrificed for us.” Hence we rest, protected by the paschal blood, and feeding on the paschal lamb, with its unleavened bread and bitter herbs, from day to day. “Let us keep the feast” (1 Cor 5:8). Wherever we are, let us keep it. For we carry our passover with us, always ready, always fresh. With girded loins and staff in hand, as wayfarers, we move along, through the rough or the smooth of the wilderness, our face toward the land of promise.

That paschal lamb is CHRIST CRUCIFIED. As such He is our protection, our pardon, our righteousness, our food, our strength, our peace. Fellowship with Him upon the cross is the secret of a blessed and holy life.

We feed on that which has passed through the fire; on that which has come from the altar. No other food can quicken or sustain the spiritual life of a believing man. The unbroken body will not suffice; nor will the risen or glorified body avail. The broken body and shed blood of the Son of God form the viands on which we feast; and it is under the shadow of the cross that we sit down to partake of these, and find refreshment for our daily journey, strength for our hourly warfare. His flesh is meat indeed; His blood is drink indeed.

February 10th.

“Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things.” Isaiah 40:26

The people of God in Isaiah’s day had starved their imagination by looking on the face of idols, and Isaiah made them look up at the heavens, that is, he made them begin to use their imagination aright. Nature to a saint is sacramental. If we are children of God, we have a tremendous treasure in Nature. In every wind that blows, in every night and day of the year, in every sign of the sky, in every blossoming and in every withering of the earth, there is a real coming of God to us if we will simply use our starved imagination to realize it.

The test of spiritual concentration is bringing the imagination into captivity. Is your imagination looking on the face of an idol? Is the idol yourself? Your work? Your conception of what a worker should be? Your experience of salvation and sanctification? Then your imagination of God is starved, and when you are up against difficulties you have no power, you can only endure in darkness. If your imagination is starved, do not look back to your own experience; it is God Whom you need. Go right out of yourself, away from the face of your idols, away from everything that has been starving your imagination. Rouse yourself, take the gibe that Isaiah gave the people, and deliberately turn your imagination to God.

One of the reasons of stultification in prayer is that there is no imagination, no power of putting ourselves deliberately before God. We have to learn how to be broken bread and poured out wine on the line of intercession more than on the line of personal contact. Imagination is the power God gives a saint to posit himself out of himself into relationships he never was in.

Reading David Wilkerson’s Daily blog today, (and please do go and read it ) I was reminded of a post I wrote in September of 2008, most part of which is the title above.

It is one of those posts that is still very much a part of my life and I have learned with slow, awkward steps and many scraped knees from falling down, to wait upon the Lord and to listen for His voice a little better than I did at the time of writing it.

I came through a personal crisis last year, that without the understanding of what I had written, I would have made it into a total disaster instead of something that I can sit here as I write to you now, and give God the Glory for.

I trust these simple thoughts will perhaps encourage someone today that is needful of some help in these areas of waiting and going, and listening and speaking.

May the Lord bless you and keep you

“When led of the Spirit, the child of God
must be as ready to wait as to go,
as prepared to be silent as to speak”
Lewis Sperry Chafer

How’s that for a thought? So often we are taught to “Go, go, go! for God.”, “Get involved everywhere”, “Put your name down for as many ministries as you can.”, “If you’re not getting involved, then you are not growing and fitting in.” Has this happened to you? Have you been pressurised to join in because it was expected of you, because it’s the ‘done thing’ without giving it a second thought as to what God wants for you?

I sometimes think that we must look like a trail of ants going on and on about our business, doing this and that and keeping busy, busy, busy for the Lord and if you are like I was until very recently, you are might well be saying to the Lord while looking over your shoulder, “Lord, are you keeping up?”

I tried, without realising it, to fit God’s vision for my life into my vision of my life, instead of the other way round. Living like this is so exhausting because we do it in our strength and not in His and we burn out, because in the process, we often neglect our relationship with Him because we are so busy, busy, busy.

I believe God wants us to be so in-tune with His Spirit that we know exactly what, when and where we are meant to do, say or be. That’s how Jesus walked, lived and spoke. That is the intimacy He is looking from each one of us and with each one of us. So how do we get to that with Him? Certainly not by doing, doing doing. Angus Buchan says “A good idea is not always a God idea.”

Just because there is a gap in a ministry or a need to be met, doesn’t mean we can rush right on in and go for it. Has it been taken it to the Lord to see what He thinks about it then waited on for His response? Sometimes He says “No”. God does say “No”. Are our lives so given to Him that we can hear that “No”? Can we hear Him when He says “Be quiet, don’t speak now.”? He sees the big picture of what is going on, we see the little picture often only of what we can see right in front of our eyes at that moment. Isaiah 40:31 says “But those who wait on the LORD Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.” (NKJV). In His strength we are renewed when we wait for Him.

A friend of mine started going to a bible study for ladies and for months she just sat, saying very little. She went to the Lord time and again, asking what her purpose was for going seeing as she was not saying anything much or contributing. He was silent, so she carried on going as she was clearly not told to “Stop going”. She has walked closely with the Lord for many, many years and has so many riches to share with brothers and sisters. One day she was bursting to make a comment or two to one of the ladies and she sensed the Lord saying to her, “So, are you going to give out your wisdom and experience or Mine?” The comment died in her mouth before she opened it, and she had to do some soul searching with Him about her spiritual pride which the Lord showed her had started creeping in. And she sat silent for weeks more until one day, the Lord ‘opened’ her mouth to another of the ladies who was struggling with an aspect of her life and the Lord gave her exactly what she needed, by what was said. If she had spoken before, she might have interfered with whatever the Lord was busy doing in her life at that time and she would have prevented her from going through what was necessary for her growth in the Lord. It is about His perfect timing for each life and our utter obedience to His voice.

Our obedience to God in absolutely everything, it is crucial in our walk with Him. We have to do everything we do and say, as ‘Unto the Lord’, but the problem sometimes comes in when we can get all ‘puffed up” with self-importance or feel spiritually superior to another or get overenthusiastic without using His wisdom in a given situation which can happen so easily – our flesh is very strong. There is no space in our hearts for ourselves, they need to be so surrendered and submitted to Him, that we can get to the place where we know instinctively when the tiny voice of the Holy Spirit is directing us.

I have blundered many, many times over years in my walk with the Lord, by not listening or not hearing or being too enthusiastic and not waiting, and even, I am ashamed to say, spiritually proud. It is only by the patience and grace of God that I have been able to learn and move a bit further along with Him than where I was before.There has been lots of heartache and agony of realisation afterwards, that where I barged in was not what God had wanted.

I am so grateful to the Lord that in everything we can give thanks and we can repent and can move on with Him in confidence, without feeling condemned. As we grow in Him and make ourselves wholly available to Him, we learn slowly how to “live and move and have our being in Him.” (Acts 17:28)

1 Kings 19:11-13 reads: Then He said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the LORD.” And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice. So it was, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. Suddenly a voice came to him, and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” .

That’s the place we all need to strive to get to. If we are so noisy and busy in our lives, we will never hear the still small voice. Can you hear it? Ask Him to open your heart and ears. He will do it.

Bless you

I was curious to find out more about GD Watson, as I had never heard of him until yesterday. He was born in 1845 and went to the Lord in 1923. A short bio can be found at the Well of Oath site. I also found a link to other sermons by him at Sermon Index – GD WATSON should you wish to read more.

All I know is that a person who can write like this, has to live or have lived like this. You cannot not know this and write it. It can only be Holy Spirit inspired and lived out in the actual life to be explained and written as it has.

I pray it will not challenge you, but change your heart towards the Lord and what it means to walk in Him. May it cause your heart to cry out to Him for more of Him and nothing more.

It is in my humble understanding that nothing less can or will ever truly satisfy us as His children this side of heaven… He has to be fully Sovereign in our lives. We were designed by the Lord to have this kind of dependence on Him to the utmost.
